Curatorial Intern

primary function

Curatorial Interns provide strategic support to the curatorial department through assistance with artifacts as they come into the lab or through specific work with already curated materials in the collection. Interns may either be project specific or responsible for general collections management tasks. The Curatorial Intern may also assist the curators in the development of the Jamestown Rediscovery Archaeological Reference Collection through rehousing, inventory, and artifact retrieval.

key roles and responsibilities
  • Assist with the care and management of the collections.
  • Undertake proper documentation of the artifacts and objects in the collection.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the Jamestown Rediscovery Reference Collection.
  • Perform specialized laboratory tasks such as mending ceramics, artifact labeling, flotation, and picking water screened materials.
  • Notify curatorial and conservation staff if additional archival supplies or specialized tools are needed for artifact processing.
  • Notify curatorial and conservation staff of artifacts in need of immediate attention.
  • Provide general assistance to students, field staff, and volunteers working in the lab.
  • Participate in public outreach and education-related tasks, including an agreement to be featured on Jamestown Rediscovery social media channels and other media output.
  • Assist the collections team on special assignments and perform other related duties as required.
qualifications
  • Either completed or in-progress Bachelors of Arts or Science in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Geology, or a related field, and some understanding of archaeological methods
compensation and schedule
  • The duration of the project will not exceed $2400. Pay is commensurate with experience.
  • Start date is flexible (can be immediate) hours must be completed by July 1st 2024.
  • 4 hours per week minimum commitment.
